From the mind of critic: “When the words reasonable and necessary become the difference between life and death, do semantics miss the point? Are we worrying more about describing something, than what actually happened? Are courts the same? If reasonable doubt is the determining factor between guilty and not guilty, who is the judge of what’s reasonable? If what’s reasonable to us might not be reasonable to somebody else, is that a reason for life in prison? Is that a reason for a death sentence that’s court ordered, or one that stems from a spilt second decision? How many more people have to die, before we realize that prejudging somebody can not only lead innocent families to deal with never ending personal hells, but also for racist tendencies to become more ingrained over time, when after the fact its found that what gave a reasonable or necessary suspicion, was completely opposite of what we thought and what spurred our action, but we continue to reply we had a reasonable suspicion so we had to act? What about racists who said, well we had a reasonable suspicion that this black man raped our white women, so we had to hang, burn and mutilate him, because even if he didn’t do it, many others “like him” do? Police officers do have one of the toughest jobs, having to protect the population when people straight hate them. However, just because we’ve made great strides in race relations, doesn’t mean we don’t still have a long way to go. And just because we’ve made those great strides, doesn’t mean we still don’t have to dispel all hateful stereotypes of how we think certain groups act. That’s not to say white guys haven’t been unjustly shot by the police, because they have. But we must ask ourselves if Stephon Clark was white, would we have acted differently. If the answer is yes, we’ve answered exactly how far we still have to go. Human life, is worth more than the words “reasonable suspicion. Admission of our faults, allows us to get past them. If after a shooting, the purported gun which caused the shooting to occur is found to not be a gun, we can’t say we would’ve acted the same with a white guy, because hypocrisy would illuminate the value we place on human life. Unity means getting rid of bad seeds, not simply seeds that sprout plants we don’t know.” 😊
