from the mind of critic-5/26/18

From the mind of critic: “When we sit for a meal with others, do we wait for others to be seated with their plate, before we dig into ours? Do we sneak bites before anybody sees, because although we want to share the meal, our starvation is our main concern? Do we start shoveling the second we have our plate, not caring if people have shown up or if anybody sees, because our needs are our only concern? Do we feel getting together and enjoying human interaction is more important than the meal itself, or do we feel the food and conversation must be shared in symbiosis, because if one is ignored in place of the other, it won’t harken back to something universal in human history, when it otherwise might have? Breaking bread might be a cliche, but it’s one of the most uplifitng and unifying ideas in our toolkit. Sharing food and conversation breaks down barriers and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, no matter how many times we’ve looked in the mirror, we’re all the same deep down. All humans need food for physical health, and human interaction for emotional health. We can’t surive if we have either or, we aren’t robots. No matter our religion, culture, oreintation or environment, we can come to terms with others, if we come to terms with ourselves. Sharing a meal is like sharing our soul, we can’t start unless somebody else is doing the same. We can eat before everyone is seated, but we aren’t breaking bread. Food is a great unifyer, when our plates are equally full.” 🙂
